Sapphire has added another varietal to its HD 6900 family of graphics cards.

The HD 6970, coming with 2GB GDDR5, boasts a new dual-fan cooling solution - as well as dual BIOS functionality - to give users the choice to switch between fast, quiet operation or performance tuning.

Clock speeds come in at 880MHz for the HD 6970 GPU and 1,375MHz (5,500MHz effective) for the onboard memory. Speaking of the new dual-fan cooling solution, Sapphire adds that it utilises two 90mm fans - featuring thin impellers - which deliver the same amount of air as conventional fans, but at a 10 per cent lower rotational speed.

Moving over to the dual BIOS functionality, it's understood that the standard position apparently ensures that load temperatures are up to 25 per cent lower than a reference-based cooler. When switched to the performance option though, GPU voltage is increased to 1.2V, and Sapphire tells us that the powertune adjustment for overclocking, is raised to 50 per cent. Together with Sapphire's TriXX utility, it's said that the HD 6970 is primed for overclocking potential.

What's more, Sapphire advises that there will be no price premium for this new offering - compared to the pricing for its standard HD 6970 part.

Well people are waiting on Southern Islands (7k series) so an update to a 6k series card is only important if it indicates that SI won't launch properly this year.

Which we already know (in this market segment).
