3. Kids Connect The Dots Lite

There are 101 of the popular dot-to-dot game on the Android marketplace, but Kids Connect The Dots Lite is a great place to start. If your toddler is just learning their first numbers it gives them a helping hand along the way by highlighting the next dot they should press. A narrator also calls out each number as they press it.

To create the pattern, your child simply has to tap their finger on screen in sequence to create an array of colourful pictures, which you can then talk to them about. It's a rewarding app for your toddler, and they'll soon get the hang of following the shape of the pattern even if they don't know numbers.

Currently there are over 100 images available in this free version and also the option to change numbers to letters to help teach them the alphabet.

Kids younger than 4 will still love this

4. AtoZ for Kids

This interactive application is a good starting to teach kids letter recognition, phonetics and motivate them to learn the alphabet in a fun way.

Easy swipe control allows your child to move through the pages on their own as they view pictures of animals, birds, fruits and flowers. The narrator spells out and pronounces words so that you can try and encourage your child to join in, and for younger toddlers there are also plenty of fun sounds to listen to as they tap on the colourful images.

5. What's The Sound Free Version

There are a variety of sound applications on the Android marketplace that follow specific themes, but What's The Sound features a wide variety of noises.

Presentation is excellent, with good-quality pictures of farmyard and wild animals, various modes of transport and musical instruments. And pictures are complemented by crystal-clear sounds of donkeys, tigers, tractors and trumpets that will entertain your toddler.

The narrator also calls out the name of each picture before the sound plays out. Your toddler will soon be running around the house roaring like a lion!

All applications in this feature are currently available to download directly from the Android marketplace.
