At HEXUS.gaming we often focus on the videogames of the next-gen consoles and PC, with their powerful game engines and polished graphics, but in the world of the handheld, the Nintendo DS has been performing commercial miracles since its inception into popular gaming culture in 2004, due to the release of some superb and innovative titles. Over the last seven days, readers of HEXUS.gaming have been voting for their favourite Nintendo DS games of all time.

Without further ado, and in reverse order, here are the Top Ten DS games as voted by our readers. Thanks to everyone who voted.

10. Contact

Contact is possibly the least known DS game in our top ten, but our readers believe that the combination of the involving and surprising plot, the enigmatic characterisation and the unique role playing elements means that it's worthy to stand side to side with those games that have sold millions of units across the Globe.

Full and intuitive touch screen controls blend with extensive equipment and character progression features whilst both screens are used throughout – one for the action and one to provide a constant link with the game’s enigmatic prime mover, the ever-present Professor. With a leisurely Wi-Fi island dedicated to multiplayer adventuring rounding off the exhaustive list of features, Contact provided a role-playing package that few can match.

9. Nintendogs: Chihuahua and Friends

Who would have thought a pet simulation game would become one of the most popular franchises on the Nintendo DS? The only difference between the various versions in the series is the selection of breeds which the player starts with, but all the other breeds can be unlocked as the player progresses through the game. The gameplay variety in Nintendogs makes for great interaction between the user and the puppy. Using the touchsceen, the owner can play with, train, pet, walk, and wash the dog. Using the microphone, the player can create voice commands that the virtual puppy will understand and (assuming it is properly trained) follow. Dogs can be walked to the park where they can practice their disc catching skills and to the gymnasium to practice agility skills. Competitions are also an entertaining aspect of the game, as one can enter their dog in disc competitions--the best place is to practice in the park – agility trials, where you train your pup in the gymnasium, and obedience trials. A Strange game, but uniquely addictive.

8. Animal Crossing: Wild World Animal Crossing: Wild World offered a living, breathing world inside the Nintendo DS, where you could invite friends to visit from anywhere on earth. In this sequel to the wildly popular Nintendo GameCube game, players and up to three friends can hang out in the same village and interact in real time - either through wireless LAN or over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Players can visit a friend's village from thousands of miles away and the touch screen makes item management and world navigation a breeze. Days and seasons pass in real time, so whether players want to decorate their homes, catch bugs or fish, collect brand-new items like hats and sunglasses or just chat with the wild and wacky characters in their villages, there's always something to do.
