As expected, EVGA has made NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 285 GPU available to Mac Pro users in the form of its GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition.

The card, pictured above and available from the Apple Store, dethrones ATI's Radeon HD 4870 as the most powerful GPU available for Mac Pro systems. The engineered-to-work-with-a-Mac card features a GPU clocked at 648MHz, 1GB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 2,484MHz and 240 stream processors - making it identical to its PC equivalent.

However, despite the hardware going unchanged, EVGA's Mac Edition will be priced at $449.99 - that's $100 more than EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 for the PC. Looking closer, it's also more expensive than EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 2GB FTW - that $439.99 PC card comes pre-overclocked, with double the amount of on-board memory, for $10 less.

And we thought that Apple tax was merely a myth.

In all honesty why do they charge more? Is there really anything different at the end of the day? If not why don't people just buy a PC version of the card instead?
I think you are overlooking one of the main differences with this and the PC version… it has a MAC Edition label on it so i am sure most will agree with me here its worth the extra $100.00 :)
So… if you plugged the PC version of the card into a Mac, would it work? If not, and they have had to make fundamental architectural changes to the PC version to make this card, then I can understand the price premium as they would need to recoup devleopment costs - and presumably they won't be selling too many of these…

But if the above isn't the case, why on earth would this card even exist? :O_o1:
Slightly modified firmware + “Mac Edition” label + gullible mac owners = moar profit!
lol. For a minute I thought the Mac one is hardware-wise different to the PC one.
