The Backlight

This is probably the coolest feature of the new iPod.  A lovely light blue backlight for the screen and controls that glow red.  Due to white leds having varying levels of 'blueness' most iPods are either white, light blue or really blue. This backlight can be set to switch off after intervals ranging from 2s to always-on.  Even in direct sunlight the backlight does help to get rid of reflections.

iPod's New Dock

Probably the most controversial alteration to the tried and proven iPod design.  The new dock is Apple's answer to recharging the iPod, and this base unit also includes a dedicated line-out socket, which is shown in the image below, where the volume of the signal is controlled by the external amplifier.  Having a dock meant the regular firewire port has been abandoned for a newer connector.  As soon as the iPod is seated in the Dock it will play a tune indicating that it has been seated properly.  The iPod can also connect to the firewire port without the Dock if one wishes to do so.
