Calzaghe remains undefeated

The votes were counted and results finalised last night at BBC's annual Sports Personality of the Year event.

The top prize was awarded to Welsh boxer, Joe Calzaghe who acknowledged the moment by calling it "the proudest moment of my career".

"I feel 100% that it's proper recognition for what I've achieved - it's been an amazing year for me" said Calzaghe when speaking to BBC Sport. The prizes for the Calzaghe camp didn't stop there either, with dad Enzo picking up the award for Coach of the Year. "I'm tremendously proud, especially with my dad" he added.

Calzaghe beat Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton to the award, Hamilton claimed second place with boxing's Ricky Hatton coming up in third place. With Hamilton having lost out on the Formula 1 championship this season, right at the very end, and Ricky Hatton having lost his biggest fight this past weekend, Calzaghe was undoubtedly the deserved winner after remaining undefeated throughout his illustrious career.

The 630,455 votes were broken down as follows:

1. Joe Calzaghe 177,748 (28.19%)
2. Lewis Hamilton 122,649 (19.45%)
3. Ricky Hatton 85,280 (13.53%)
4. James Toseland 84,570 (13.41%)
5. Jason Robinson 67,061 (10.64%)
6. Paula Radcliffe 34,895 (5.53%)
7. Jonny Wilkinson 30,302 (4.81%)
8. Andy Murray 13,242 (2.1%)
9. Justin Rose 10,227 (1.62%)
10. Christine Ohuruogu 4,481 (0.71%)

Should Lewis Hamilton manage to claim his first Formula 1 championship next season, he'll be a hot favourite for Sports Personality of the Year next time around.
