BBC lands five-year deal with Formula 1

It's been 12 years since ITV took over as broadcasters of motorsport's ultimate racing competition; Formula 1. This however, the 2008 season, will be the last on ITV for the next few years as the BBC today announced a five-year deal to bring Formula 1 back to its screens.

The new deal, beginning with the 2009 Formula 1 season, encompasses all platforms and will see the BBC broadcast Formula 1 races on TV, radio and the BBC sport website.

BBC Sport director of sport rights, Dominic Coles, said:

"The biggest motorsporting event in the world is returning home after 12 years. We were delighted when Bernie Ecclestone approached us about the return of F1 to the BBC."

"F1 is a crown jewel of sports broadcasting, so to bring the rights back to their traditional home from 2009 is tremendously exciting. Fans will be able to enjoy uninterrupted, state of the art and innovative coverage from BBC Sport, across all of our TV, radio and new media platforms, for the first time since 1996."

Formula 1 has recently returned to form with rivalry and great racing among its young stars such as Kimi Raikonnen, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Uninterrupted coverage on the BBC is sure to go down a treat with fans of the sport and we'll all be hoping for a return of the magic theme tune called 'Motor Sport', arranged by Roger Barsotti and taken from Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain'.

With sporting events such as the World Cup, the Olympics, Six Nations, Wimbledon, Snooker, Match of the Day and now Formula 1, the BBC has an outstanding offering of free-to-view sporting coverage.

Yep good news, however I feel so strongly about it i've already sent response to BBC suggesting that if they refer to it as Jewel in the Crown sporting event, there should be an appropriate knowledgable commentry team in place, that is concise accurate and non uber hamilton biased.

There should also not be eye candy unless she knows what the hell she is talking about. Suzy Perry from Moto GP type person ONLY please.

F1 will be made or broken on the BBC by the quality of the commentary team imo.

Stop the cock!

Please, BBC, stop the cock!

Great news that the BBC is getting it back. ITV's coverage now is good, but it's taken them a long time to get things sorted - I thought their first few years were pretty poor. I hope the BBC keep Martin Brundle and find someone to partner him who isn't quite so irritating.

The only downside is that I shudder to think how much the BBC have lined Bernie's pockets.

I disagree. Standing outside Lewis Hamilton's garage, cutting away only for a couple of lines on Jenson Button discussing a new contract, a walk through the new cars and drivers and a lap of the track (with Hamilton) isn't good coverage. It's bloody awful.

James Allen's fine, but not as a commentator. If he just commentated he'd be OK, but he shouts. It's all so fake. He's the Jonathan Pearce of motor-sport. Blundell is like stale cheese. If it could talk, it would sound like him. As you say though, Brundle is a class act.

I listened to the 5Live commentary of the German GP last year while watching it on ITV. Murray was substituting for David Croft. He was good (if you consider it was radio commentary and not TV and he was even more confused than normal), they kept cutting to golf and football, yet even that was miles better than ITV.

For decent motor-sport coverage, and I never thought I'd be saying this, you have to look at the current NASCAR coverage (except Fox) and Indycars from back in the mid-90's.
BBC can always outbid the other channels because of the massive tv licensing funding…

Wonder how much of our licence fee did they pay for it…

That will be why they lost it in the first place then. Same goes for the football.
