Highways Agency prepares for Christmas getaway
One of the busiest times of the year for travellers is upon us as approximately 18 million cars are expected to take to the roads as part of the big Christmas getaway.
To help ease our journeys, the Highways Agency has completed or suspended nearly two thirds of all major roadworks. Thirty-four sets of roadworks have been completed and a further eighteen are being suspended in an effort to make Christmas travel as smooth as possible.
Tom Harris, the Minister for Roads, said:
"At Christmas and the New Year the Highways Agency takes all possible steps to allow drivers to use the roads safely and without delays. Removing roadworks will not only help people who are travelling to visit friends and family, but also Christmas shoppers and goods vehicle drivers who will be on the roads making deliveries as we approach the holiday.
"The roads will be busy, so we urge drivers to plan their journeys and leave extra time to travel safely at this busy time."
Travel association, ABTA, also reveals that a record 3.5 million Britons will be heading overseas this Christmas and New Year and estimates that Saturday December 22nd will be the busiest day for travel.
