What do you do when the battle for high-definition supremacy between Blu-ray and HD DVD shows no sign of abating?

You bat on both sides, of course!

Samsung is not only batting on both sides but is doing so at once, with its third-generation high-definition player. The BD-UP5000 Duo HD panders to both the Blu-ray and HD DVD crowd by being able to play both formats in one machine.

What marks this particular machine out, Samsung claims, is support for the interactive technologies present in both formats - BD Java and HDi - giving users the full gamut of features from both competing high-definition platforms, unavailabe on the LG multi-format model we saw at CES 2007.

The BD-UP5000 also carries what the company terms as Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) processing, which, via the HDMI output, allows movies to played back at their source-recorded settings - 24fps for most films.

No word on pricing or availability, though.
