Getting there

The glacial progress of YouView - the ‘open' internet TV standard led by the Beeb - continued yesterday with the release of v1.0 of its technical specification. This is the set of technical parameters that must be adhered to in order for devices to be interoperable with the platform.

Additionally YouView announced four new ‘device partners' who have committed to making YouView devices. They are Huawei, Pace, Manhattan and Vestel, but it's not clear how their involvement differs, if at all, from ‘innovation partners' Cisco, Humax and Technicolor, other than timing.

"We're delighted to confirm the final launch specification for YouView to help any manufacturer develop a connected TV device. Through promoting common technical standards for connected TV, consumers will get the widest possible range of devices supporting high quality content," said Richard Halton, YouView CEO.

"All of these companies have demonstrated expertise in bringing consumer electronics products to market, with wide reach and strong brands. I look forward to working with them all as we continue to strengthen the YouView ecosystem to bring more choice to consumers."

There was no update on when the project will become a reality, with early 2012 being the last update we had. If you've got some time to kill on a Friday afternoon, you can access the 229-page PDF here.
