Chinese system builder Lenovo and the company behind Blackberry smartphones, Research In Motion (RIM), have announced a collaboration that will allow users of Lenovo notebooks to automatically synchronise their Blackberry email with the email on their notebook, even when it's turned off.

The product is called Lenovo Constant Connect and it is designed to make business notebook users independent from the need to find and pay for Wi-Fi hotspots or invest in mobile broadband in order to access email on their notebooks.

"With more and more mobile professionals relying on both their BlackBerry smartphone and ThinkPad laptop PC, we view better integration between the two devices as a necessity," said Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing. "Today's announcement is the first step in combining these best-in-class solutions to deliver a more useful and powerful mobile work experience."

For some reason, details of the ‘solution' were thin on the ground in the press release, but reports have the service being enabled by an always-on, low power Express Card that is inserted into the notebook and costs $150. Lenovo did confirm that it will first make an appearance in the US in Q2 2009 and be rolled out to the rest of the world later in the year.

Does this seem like a good idea to you or can you see little advantage over existing mobile data options? Let us know in the HEXUS.community.

How utterly pointless.

If you have a BlackBerry and laptop, which you use for business, then more than likely your IT department's running a BlackBerry Enterprise Server and Exchange or Domino etc.
