Crysis Warhead and DiRT 2

Starting off with Crysis Warhead.

We're seeing an up-to nine per cent performance increase at 1,920x1,200, beating ATI's estimates. As Crysis has a run-to-run variability of five per cent at the worst of times and we're looking at a Radeon HD 5850 in particular, the results are within expectations.

ATI reckons that DiRT 2 can run 20 per cent faster with the new drivers. There's nothing in it as we benchmark the game in DX9 mode.

Switch to DX11 and the story is different.  Historically we commented that the performance drop-off from DX9 to DX11 is huge - 54.7fps down to 35.4fps at 2,560x1,600. Catalyst 10.3a brings a 14 per cent improvement in average frame-rates, and the new driver makes the game smoother at this ultra-high resolution.
