Most users might not rush out to purchase low-end GPUs primarily for gaming purposes, but it's worth knowing if a card is at all capable.

Our OpenGL test - run at low quality with no anti-aliasing and no anisotropic filtering - produces decent numbers on the trio of discrete cards. The Radeon HD 4200 IGP, meanwhile, delivers an unplayable experience at 1,680x1,050.

Our most intensive gaming benchmark, Far Cry 2, shows that the Inno3D GeForce GT 220 is roughly on par with the Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 - both delivering just enough power to provide acceptable frame rates. The Radeon HD 4670 is significantly faster, though, and the IGP, clearly, isn't up to the task.

It's a similar story in Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. The GeForce GT 220 offers up to 16 per cent better performance than the slightly-cheaper Radeon HD 4650, but is taken to task by the same-priced Radeon HD 4670.

As far as no-frills 3D gaming is concerned, the GeForce GT 220 is a useful step up from integrated graphics, but it's not competitive with a price-comparable rival offering from AMD.
