When the going gets tough, the Radeon HD 4870 CrossFire goes like the Duracell bunny.

HD 4870 is consistently faster than the dual-GPU Radeon HD 3870 X2 and gets reasonably close to GTX 280. A green 9800 GTX sandwich envelops the HD 4850.
