SunSpider is used to evaluate a browser's JavaScript performance, and surprise, surprise, the Core i7-4770K is around eight per cent faster than the previous-generation champ.

Look hard enough and there are areas in which the performance improvement can be far larger. Intel's new IGPs are armed with various OpenCL improvements, resulting in a near-20-per-cent gain in the LuxMark rendering test. Launching LuxMark on the Sandy Bridge platform resulted in a graphics driver crash; hence the no score.

The performance gains continue to appear modest, but in the nine benchmarks thus far, the Core i7-4770K has refused to step down from the top of the chart. PCMark 7 examines overall system performance and finds the quad-core Haswell platform to be five per-cent quicker than quad-core Ivy Bridge, and 12 per cent quicker than quad-core Sandy Bridge.
