Simple, spacey storage

Just a few months after the launch of Hitachi's 2TB, 7,200RPM Deskstar hard drive - the 7K2000 - Japan's biggest electronics firm has announced another 2TB external hard drive in the shape of its new "SimpleDrive."

The vertical drive - encased in anodised aluminium to keep cool and take up less desk space - works with both Macs and PCs, has a Turbo USB 2.0 interface, which is apparently some 25 per cent faster than its predecessor, and includes Hitachi's Fabrik backup software which automatically copies selected files from the host machine. Hitachi has even thrown in 2GB of free online storage to sweeten the deal.

As well as the oodles of storage space on offer with the 2TB version, which Hitachi is recommending for a sale at $250, the firm is also offering the device in 500GB and 1TB flavours for $100 and $130 respectively.

The company has also said that its other Simple Tech-branded 3.5in drives will now get bumped up to 2TB capacity, including the Pro Drive, the Duo Pro Drive - the dual-drive equivalent which can be set up for RAID 0 or RAID 1 - and the Hitachi Internal Hard Drive Kit.

Pro Drive, now offered in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB for $120, $170 and $300 respectively, also sports USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and 3Gb/sec eSATA connections, whilst the Duo Pro, which boasts the same features, comes in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB versions priced at $200, $300 and $500. The new 2TB Hitachi Internal Hard Drive Kit is priced at $250.
