AMD's Yukon platform in the flesh

AMD's Ian McNaughton may well have been slipperier than an eel when interviewed by Nick on the upcoming HP notebook based on the Yukon platform, but we managed to grab some time away from the spinmeister and had a look at what AMD hopes will reinvigorate its laptop fortunes, seeing Yukon as more than a netbook but not quite a regular laptop.

The HP Pavilion dv2 will be the only manifestation of AMD's Yukon platform - Athlon Neo CPU and 690G chipset - for a while. The design, which is scheduled to launch in April, weighs in at around 1.7kg but does without an optical drive.

The 1.6GHz Athlon Neo CPU is soldered on to a reduced-size M690G motherboard, to save space and reduce power. According to AMD's representatives, the processor consumes a maximum of 15W, the chipset some 8W, and, if chosen, the discrete Radeon HD 3410 around 12W. Add them all together and you arrive at a pull of 35W, which is what most AMD Turion (mobile) CPUs pull on their own.
