It’s coming!

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is coming to Desire handsets on Three's network, although there is no confirmed release date yet.

Three tweeted the update is on its way "but we don't have timescales yet," according to Tech Radar.

HEXUS recently reported that owners of the older older HTC Desire handset will face a pretty long wait for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update after HTC has said newer versions such as the Desire HD and Z will get the update first, so the news from 3 seems to suggest (to optimists at least) that the roll-out could be relatively speedy.

It has previously been reported that the Desire range will not get a Gingerbread boost until the Desire S hits the shops this spring.  The newest iteration of the Desire will launch with Gingerbread.

There was speculation that the first Gingerbread update will be released 1 or 2 months after the launch of the Desire S, which could be as soon as May or as late as Christmas and a belief that newer models would get the update first. That could still ring ‘true' even with Three's tweet.

The Desire HD and Desire Z launched with Android 2.2 Froyo, while all the original Desire models should now have been upgraded to Froyo, despite having launched with Android 2.1.

It is still unclear which older HTC handsets will get Gingerbread whenever it is released, although the HTC Desire will be getting copy and paste plus VOiP functionality plus better battery management.

One of Gingerbread's most exciting features is NFC but only phones with a certain chip will be able to take advantage of the technology.

Nothing more than a PR stunt to grab some attention. I bet when Gingerbread is released on the Desire, Three will be the last company to push it out….

If that's the case, at least they realise it's something that's important to owners. Instead of fobbing them off with 2.1 :p

Well im on Three and i have a desire. I was one of the first to get 2.2 as my handset is completely unbranded so it came straight from HTC. Unless they changed that between now and 9 or 10 months ago i suspect you will be 100% wrong and infact the update will come to 3 users before everyone else… so nergh nergh neh neh nerghhhh :p
Already running it on my rooted HTC Desire :) Community ROMs FTW! :)
