Intense ping pong battles

From the outset there are only 4 characters available, all with their own unique strengths and weaknesses, a further 7 characters can be unlocked by winning tournaments. Throughout the single player tournaments there are plenty of items awarded, including new T-shirts and new tables - completing set tasks, such as finishing a match with a spin shot, or a backhand unlocks the items. There are so many ways to reveal these items that you'll often be unsure of which move unlocks which item.

The matches themselves are often intense battles that require maximum focus and a knowledge of all of the intricate moves. The control system initially appears very simple, four buttons control four different moves, back spin, top spin, left side spin, and right side spin, but the game also utilises a focus bar which can be used to unleash a powerful shot once it is filled.

The placement of each of your shots is extremely crucial, there's only a small surface to aim for, the table measures 9ft by 5ft, and it's that carefully placed shot that will win you the game.

To serve you'll need to keep a close eye on the service metre. If you're aiming for a strong serve hold down any one of the spin buttons and wait for the metre to hit the top, and release the button once you've reached the desired power. Aiming is controlled via the left analogue stick, pull back on the stick for a short serve and push forward on the stick for a long serve. A slight lack of concentration will result in the ball hitting the net and a point to your opponent.
