UK finishes second from bottom

CeBIT 2006 gave attendees the opportunity to see the world's best players in action as the World Cyber Games Euro Championship kicked off amidst fevered interest.

The World Cyber Games 2006 Samsung Euro Championships saw competitors going head to head on the following games: Need for Speed Most Wanted, FIFA 2006, WarCraft III: Frozen Throne, Dawn of War: Winter Assault, Counter-Strike: Source, Dead or Alive 4 and Project Gotham Racing 3.

Over $100,000 in prize money was handed out to winners of this year's championship. From the outset there was a superb atmosphere in the arena and some terrific battles, none more so than the madness of WarCraft III - I didn't know the game could be played so fast!

4K.Grubby won the gold medal for the Netherlands.

Final match report
In the first map, ToD tried a tower tactic, in which he built up four upgraded towers directly next to Grubby's base. Although it looked quite promising in the beginning, Grubby was able to turn around the match, winning the map. ToD surprised the audience and obviously Grubby too by using the same tactic again, towering his opponent successfully this time. Right at the beginning of their last encounter, ToD was able to destroy two of Grubby's buildings, creating a slight advantage. But after that, Grubby built up a massive hero-level advantage in a number of skirmishes, which enabled him to take down his French counterpart in the endgame.

Germany had a fantastic tournament, winning Fifa, Dawn of War, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and the Dead or Alive 4 tournaments. Dennis Schellhase won the Fifa tournament in a thrilling match, narrowly beating his competitor by three goals to two in his last game.

PGR 3 also made an appearance on the Xbox 360, with King Tuur from the Netherlands notching up one fast lap after another.

It was an exciting, tension-filled four days culminating in a spectacular awards ceremony. Unfortunately the UK didn't perform - we finished 21st in the medal tables out of 22 countries, with Pottsi finishing 9th on Need For Speed: Most Wanted.
