Google has added further functionality to its Google+ social network by unveiling Google+ Pages, a new way for businesses to connect with customers and fans.

Launch partners include Angry Birds, CNN, Fox News, the Muppets, the Dallas Cowboys, Pepsi, Toyota, Macy’s, X Games, WWE, Train, Barcelona Football Club and Save the Children, but expect those numbers to swell as other companies use the service to pimp their brands.

“For businesses and brands, Google+ pages help you connect with the customers and fans who love you. Not only can they recommend you with a +1, or add you to a circle to listen long-term. They can actually spend time with your team, face-to-face-to-face. All you need to do is start sharing, and you’ll soon find the super fans and loyal customers that want to say hello.” Google SVP of Social Vic Gundotra said in a blog post.

Usual Google+ members can add brands to their ‘circles’ and vote on posts to help them gain popularity. To search for specific brands, you need to follow a new process. Just go to Google and search for [+], followed by the page you're interested in (like +Angry Birds). You’ll automatically be taken to the relevant Google+ page, and can then add them to a ‘circle.’

Just created one for my research group. Could be good if it's used in the right way.
I was wondering what they were going to do for businesses, they couldn't ignore them for much longer.

I like how, because of the design of G+, I don't have to bother with businesses and can continue my use of G+ without ever noticing the presence of businesses. It's a pity my family don't bother with it though, they still complain that I don't use Facebook :(
I know the feeling. G+ is nice and clean, and so far Google hasn't made any stupid sweeping change, which have become routine on FB. Still can't convince anyone on FB to shift to G+.
I'm not so sure.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to concentrate on getting *people* using G+ before flooding it with businesses? Seems a strange (and potentially dangerous) idea, to me.

Apparently they did have plenty of people signing up to Google+ from the beginning, but that lately its popularity has been declining again. I would assume that they hope that the addition of brands will tempt people back, but whether it will remains to be seen.

Using Facebook and Twitter seems to work for plenty of brands, so I wouldn't be surprised to see this become a successful promotional tool too, but some may argue that it should have been done from the beginning and that it could be too late.
