Any gadget enthusiast can't help but covet the Harmony 900 universal remote launched by Logitech last month, but its £300 price tag means its little more than a pipe dream for most consumers.

Hoping to provide something a little more mainstream, the Swiss manufacturer is following up today with the Logitech Harmony 700 - priced at a far more palatable £99.

Whilst the Harmony 700 can't control as many devices (it's limited to six as opposed to 15 on the Harmony 900), it does provide plenty of useful functionality - including a colour LCD display (sadly not a touchscreen) and one-click control for everyday tasks.

The remote features back-lit, soft-touch buttons and is finished in a finger-print-resistant texture. We're told it'll support over 225,000 devices, and as with other Harmony remotes, it'll connect to a PC via USB to allow for "guided online setup". What's useful is that the USB cable can also be attached to a mains power adaptor for easy recharging of the remote's two NiMh batteries.

At under £100, the Logitech Harmony 700's certainly tempting.

Hmmmm… media centre control, perhaps? I know nothing about these remotes, but I was looking at one of these:

LInky
I had one of those gyrations about a year and a half ago. Took a week or so to get used to it and as I'd used the Go's before the movement became second nature. It was the perfect remote apart from one thing….. the 2 buttons equivalent to mouse buttons, either side of the motion activate, went pear shaped after about 6 months. Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate on getting another one, if I could afford. Just don't play games with it (or let the wife) as the button will bugger up soon enough
Hmm, it's not as pretty as the Harmony One, and that's regularly for available for around £70. The One has a touchscreen too. One of the best bits of A/V kit I've ever bought. Even the Mrs likes (and can use) it!

I've got it in my head now that it's kind of like a wii controller in terms of waving it around. Is that right? Or is it more of a “fling it to the side violently, and it'll move 500 pixels each time, until you hit your target, then click” type thing?
I have Harmony 525 which cost 40 odd pounds and find it brilliant for everything in one room. Took a while to set up and get right but now is a life saver. One remote to control them all.. Awesome
