PRESS RELEASE

As the Plex team aptly states in this video, the COVID SIP has sucked, most especially due to not being able to hang out with friends and family. Technology has been a saving grace, no doubt, but there has been something missing: watching a good movie together.

Until today.

Plex has rolled out Watch Together, a new feature that enables users to do just that - watch movies and shows at the same time via Plex, for free. Watch Together works with all free on demand Plex content, as well as titles from personal media libraries.

Other notes:

  • Developed out of Plex Labs, Watch Together is currently in beta - with lots more integration to come, including ideas from community feedback
    • For example, at launch there is no communication feature directly in Watch Together - Plex suggests using any separate chat app in conjunction such as Zoom or
  • Supported platforms include Apple (iOS and tvOS), Android (mobile and TV). Roku is coming soon, with Plex web player and other platforms to follow – this is far more platforms than Hulu’s new Watch Party. In addition, Hulu’s feature is limited to who can use it and not all content is available to view, unlike Plex Watch Together, which enables watching of all ad-supported video on demand titles in Plex
  • Anyone watching can play, pause, or seek around during the session
  • Watch Together is currently free to all Plex users, though may become a Plex Pass feature down the road

The blog is here https://www.plex.tv/blog/coming-in-hot-watch-together-chill/

As mentioned, Watch Together works with the thousands of free ad-supported video on demand titles Plex has to offer. Here’s a taste of what’s streaming on Plex in June:

  • Four Weddings and a Funeral
  • Hoosiers
  • The Exorcist
  • The Usual Suspects
  • Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
  • Hey Arnold!
  • Serena
  • Force Majeure
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  • The Cable Guy

Lastly, for those looking for ideas on what to watch, Plex has a new blog called The Watch List dedicated to just that.
