Total recall

PC maker HP has announced the third phase of a notebook battery recall programme that started over a year ago, by adding a bunch more models - manufactured between August 2007 and May 2008 - to those that may have batteries in danger of overheating.

We received the following statement from HP:

Customer service and safety are top priorities for HP.

As a result, HP is expanding a previously announced voluntary battery recall and free replacement program. The expansion includes additional battery packs and notebook model series.

The affected battery packs contain cells that have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.  The initial program was announced on May 14, 2009.

HP fully stands behind the products it makes and has taken a proactive approach to this situation to ensure the safety of our customers and the integrity and quality of our products.

Here's the list of potentially affected systems and batteries. You can find details of how to validate a dodgy battery here.

If I have one of these, and I believe my laptop has developed faults consistent with heat damage, what chance I can get my laptop replaced?

Will have to check when I get home, anyway…
