By April we were starting to wonder what was going on at AMD, with increasing signs of a big clearout of staff at both executive and foot-soldier level. We also saw signs of how Microsoft intends to adapt to the 21st century and a possible new force in European technology retailing.

May was a month for corporate manoeuvring, in which Microsoft Yahoo! was asking for too much money and scrapped the proposed takeover, something Yahoo! shareholders must be crying about to this day. Meanwhile, HP did manage to buy giant IT services company EDS.
