Introduction

NVIDIA pleasantly surprised the world when it launched the GeForce 8800 GTX in November of last year. G80 was good, real good and continues to be so.

AMD/ATI's riposte, when it finally came, was the Radeon HD 2900 XT. Late and comparatively slow as it was when compared to the upper echelons of G80, the attractive street price of around £250 meant that it fought on the value front - if £250 can be termed value for a single component.

We take a look at the range-topping cards from both AMD and NVIDIA and detemine whether die-hard gamers should flash the cash and lay down £420 for the all-conquering GeForce 8800 Ultra, or save their hard-earned and opt for the feature-rich R600?

What better way to determine this than to take each SKU from a company that bats on both sides. ASUS obliged by sending down its EAH2900XT and EN8800ULTRA models.
