Introduction

What do you do when your flagship GPU has ruled the roost for over 6 months and your main competitor keeps pushing back its release of its spec-matching technology?

That's the nice dilemma facing NVIDIA right now. It launched its DX10-compliant GeForce 8800 GTX GPU back at the start of November 2006 and has further introduced the cheaper 8800 GTS and 8600 series in subsequent months.

Rumour has it that AMD's DX10-based GPU architecture will struggle to beat out GeForce 8800 GTS, let alone mount a significant challenge to the GTX.

NVIDIA, though, isn't taking any chances and wants to ensure that the performance and prestige crown remains with G80.

That's why today - and with perfect timing to take away the limelight from a certain R600 - NVIDIA is launching the GeForce 8800 Ultra.
