Another settlement

Back in 2008 graphics chip-maker NVIDIA confirmed reports that some of its mobile GPUs were failing due to some weak packaging material. At the time it took a one-time charge of $200 million related to the issue, presumably to cover recalls and repairs.

There was a subsequent class-action lawsuit on behalf of owners of notebooks that had experienced technical problems as a result of ‘connectorgate', and NVIDIA offered to settle the suit last September.

Laughably, the amount of money NVIDIA has set aside to compensate claimants is a mere two million dollars. The reason we say ‘mere' is that NVIDIA has to pay claimants' legal fees of $13 million. So the lawyers are getting six-and-a-half times more money than all the people actually affected by the issue.

Still, another settlement announced last week should take some of the pain away from such parasitism.

Anyway, if you bought a Dell, HP or Apple notebook between 2006 and 2008 and found it to be a bit moody, you may be able to make a claim. NVIDIA has set up a website to assist claimants and you can find a list of all affected notebooks here.

The window of opportunity for individuals to make a claim actually opened last Thursday, but it somehow escaped our attention. The deadline is 14 March. You can find out more about making a claim here.

Think this is just America. Can someone confirm?

I've got an affected laptop as well.

Yeah same here. I'll read that guide as soon as I get home later. My problem is that I bought the notebook abroad so not sure if I have any chance whatsoever.

Nvidia got away too easy from this!
@Infinite
I've got a faulty Asus G1Sn that is suffering from a defective nvidia gpu so I'm currently trying to get it sorted as it is a fault with the manufactoring therefore the retailer is liable.
Go to www.nvidiadefect.com if your from the UK as there is a lot of great info and even a step-by-step guide on how to make a claim against the company ou bought it from, as well as loads of other people who are in the same situation.
As I said I'm currently trying to claim for my laptop from DSGi but I'm awaiting their letter in response, seeing as it cost me nearly £900 and it's a laptop designed for gaming I'm not accepting anything that doesn't have at least the same power/performance so hopefully I'll have a nice shiny new laptop within the next month!
Best of luck with your laptop!

Seriously!?
If you had one of the effected laptops you would either be lucky and it still work or you would of had it go pop sold it and moved on by now, be nice to see what sort of percentage of people dont claim because they dont have the laptop/receipt anymore..

Trig;2033907']… If you had one of the effected laptops you would … of had it go pop … and moved on by now …

Pretty much my situation. I had an HP v60xx (which is listed as an affected series) bought in September 2006 and had nothing but trouble with it to the point where I gave up, stripped it down and either reused or got rid of all the components. Frustrating if I could have got some kind of repair or compensation, but I imagine there's an unrealistic number of hoops to jump through to make a claim anyway…
