NEC launches new range of DVD burners

Intros LabelFlash direct-to-disc label-printing technology in 256 shades

Ismaning, Germany, March 2006 – NEC showcases its new DVD burners with LabelFlash technology. LabelFlash burns custom motifs, lettering or images onto the top side of DVD blanks. It puts very few restrictions on creativity and design. The new drives support not only DVD+R(W), DVD-R(W) but also DVD-RAM.

LabelFlash – faster labelling of self-burned DVDs
Innovative LabelFlash technology simplifies the labelling of self-burned DVDs – e.g. for archiving – and also enables creative DVD design. It eliminates the need for complex adhesive labelling systems and considerably enhances the durability of the media because, especially in the case of DVD blanks, the label can make the medium unreadable.

LabelFlash delivers high image quality because it enables 256 brightness shades. The labelling process takes less than ten minutes. One special feature is that both the top side and the data side of the blank can be labelled – provided that there is enough available memory. LabelFlash can be used for any blanks with a writable LabelFlash top surface. On these media, the labelled top surface is covered by an 0.6 millimetre-thick, robust protect layer which ensures that even labels that are exposed to light are extremely durable.

1. What is LabelFlash?
LabelFlash is a technology for labelling DVDs by directly burning the label onto the blank. It burns custom motifs, lettering or images onto the top side of DVD blanks. This eliminates the need for conventional paper labels. LabelFlash delivers high image quality because it enables 256 shades of blue. It produces top quality DVD labels in only five minutes.

2. How does LabelFlash work?
LabelFlash is easy to use. When the DVD has been burned, the disk is turned over, a label is created with the Nero Label Editor that comes with the product and then burned onto the blank label side. NEC’s DVD burner is supplied with a new version of the Nero burning program which supports Labelflash technology.

3. What are the advantages of LabelFlash?
LabelFlash produces visually-appealing labelled DVDs for a neat and professional result. The burned-on label is more attractive and looks more professional than conventional DVD labelling. LabelFlash labels are also more robust and easier to handle than printed adhesive labels because a printer is not required and the complex process of sticking the label onto theDVD is not necessary.

Labelling DVDs with LabelFlash usually takes around five minutes. In comparison, the creation, printing and application of an adhesive label could take up to fifteen minutes and more. Labelling hardware and adhesive labels are no longer necessary with LabelFlash. Adhesive labels are often sensitive to heat and moisture, and, if they get wet, the medium can become unreadable. DVD blank label side, in particular, are associated with the risk that they will be unreadable after labelling.

Possible applications:
· labelling of DVDs with company logos or individual lettering
· labelling of video DVDs, for example, with an image taken from the video recording, the date and a list of contents
· labelling of music DVD, for example, with a list of albums and song titles
· labelling of back-up DVDs, for example with the date of the back-up and a consecutive number
· design of DVD gifts for family and friends with personal messages such as ’Merry Christmas from…’

4. Which media are required?
The new LabelFlash media offer many advantages. They have a 0.6 mm protect layer on the top side which offers high protection against mechanical loads, fingerprints and light. The picture-burning layer underneath the protective layer is highly sensitive. This enables fast writing speeds. The disk rotates during the labelling process at 1,000 to 8,000 revolutions per second (CAV – Constant Angular Velocity). The sensitive colour layer also ensures excellent image quality with a resolution of 1,000 dpi (dots per inch) and up to 256 brightness shades.

The new NEC drives support DVD+R(W), DVD-R(W) and also DVD-RAM. NEC’s ND-4571A burner is a genuine multitalent: DVD minus and DVD plus media are written at up to 16x DVD speed, while rewritable (DVD+RW) and double-layer DVDs (DVD +R9) are written at up to 8x DVD speed. DVD-RW are processed at 6x speed. 5x speed applies for DVD RAMs. As a read drive, the burner delivers 16x DVD, 5x DVD RAM and 48x CD speed. NEC will also be marketing a lower cost model without LabelFlash, the ND-4570A, which has the same write and read speeds as the ND-4571A.
The two new DVD burners ND-3571A (with LabelFlash) and ND-3570A (without) are also available as versions which do not support DVD-RAM.

Notebook-drives
