Though Nintendo is launching the 3DS, a portable game console that can produce "3D effects without the need for any special glasses," it won't be mimicking rival Sony by bringing 3D technology to its next Wii console.

That's because the type of gamer who buys Wii isn't likely to be the same kind of person who would invest in a 3D TV, so says Nintendo game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto.

In a recent interview with Spiegel Online, via Google Translate, Miyamoto suggested that one of the reasons why it won't be looking at creating Wii 3D is because 3D gaming is going to take a long time to get established.

"I do not think the next step will be ours," he said. "Wii is indeed one reason so successful because most people do not have any HDTV equipment and know how to appreciate what the Wii offers. The Nintendo 3DS is possible because it is a portable console and it works without 3D glasses. For the living room would need a 3-D TV and it will take some time before enough households have 3-D TVs that the theme for the Gaming significant falls.

It's a shame really, if anyone could convince us that 3D gaming is actually worthwhile it's Nintendo.
