The top five

5. Resident Evil 4 – Del Lago

Resident Evil 4 blew me away when it was released back in January 2005. The game is absolutely amazing and features some of the best boss battles I can recall. It's harsh to have to choose just one but my favourite of the bunch is definitely Del Lago. Not only was he the first boss in the game, he was also undoubtedly the biggest.

4. Portal – Glados

Just because Portal is essentially a simple puzzle game with no weapons it doesn't mean there can't be any boss battles. Featuring some of the most guilt-inducing yet hilarious dialogue I've ever seen, this is one fight I still replay every now and then, even if it is just for the cake recipe.

3. Doom – Spider Mastermind

While doom definitely had its fair share of enemies, this chap is by far the most impressive. Mounted atop a cybernetic chassis with four shiny mechanical legs, each one three times your size, a chain-gun and a somewhat disturbing face that still haunts my dreams to this day. Even if you've got god mode on, you're in for one hell of a fight.

2. Conker's Bad Fur Day – The Great Mighty Poo

This is perhaps the most humorous of all boss battles. Conker enters the dung beetles' hideout and is compelled to feed sweetcorn to a strange voice echoing from a brown slurry below. He's then greeted by The Great Mighty Poo, an opera-singing pile of poop with sweetcorn for teeth. Luckily, Conker is equipped with copious amounts of toilet paper, which we all know to be poops arch-enemy.

1. Shadow of the Colossus – Avion

I was hard pushed to choose a favourite encounter from Shadow of the Colossus, all sixteen boss battles hold a special place in my heart but one stands ever so slightly above the rest and that's Avion. The feeling as Avion swoops down on you is almost indescribable. Time your jump just right and get whisked off into the air as he soars majestically into the mist. It's almost a shame I had to stab the guy to death but hey, it was him or me, plus I'm pretty sure there was an avian influenza outbreak at the time.

No Alma form Ninja Gaiden?
No foetus from Half Life? It was a pretty surreal moment fighting through Xen only to be faced with a giant floating baby!
Hmm Ruby Weapon from FF7 was a a struggle for me years ago…I exhausted all my mental stamina, and literally gave up. Still ain't been back to beat it!

I'm sure this time around I'd know what to do to counter it ;-)
Firkraag in BG2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbnQ2UhjgqQ

The pausing doesn't really do it justice but killing him after the 20th wipe felt like a real achievement rarely found in today's games.

Firkraag in BG2

I remember that with pride too!

(I should perhaps get out more - I think I recognised one too many of the bits of equipment the characters were using in the you tube link :help:)
