Introduction

AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 and Model 3800+ (S939)

Today is a busy day for AMD. The company is launching no less than 4 processors on two platforms. And it's all change at the top of AMD's consumer-level CPU hierarchy. In comes socket-939, catering for CPUs with dual-channel integrated memory controllers. What's more, S939 does away with the need for registered memory, which was the bane for many enthusiasts that looked to tread S940's performance path.

We're taking a look at the two premier socket-939 processors, namely the FX-53 and Model 3800+, which both run at 2.4GHz. AMD's marketing department will have to work overtime in delineating the differences in processors, naming schemes and sockets. We'll attempt to help their cause with our evaluation. Intel is busy readying its next iteration of consumer-level processors which also delve into using model numbers rather than pure MHz, so AMD's stolen a slight march in both nomenclature and release date. Read on to find out just what we think of AMD's new babies.
