What happens when a Corsair Flash Voyager thumbdrive meets a boy racer intent on its demise?
Following on from the ATAPI/IDE 20x internal DVD burners that Lite-On IT unveiled in November, the company is introducing two further versions of what's claimed as the world's fastest DVD writer. One is external and USB, the other internal and (three cheers!) serial ATA.

We now know for sure the sort of prices at which Windows Vista is going to sell in the UK - SCAN Computers having got Microsoft's permission to start taking orders and immediately ship 32-bit and 64-bit 'retail' OEM versions and sell standard retail versions for shipping on launch day, January 30. Standard retail versions look just as expensive as we feared but 'retail' OEM versions are far more reasonable.
The hacker who last month cracked the AACS (Advanced Access Content System) copy protection on movies in HD DVD format has now done the same with the AACS version that protects Blu-ray Disc high-def movies! And the hacker, muslix64, has also made available for download a tiny tool (just 18KByte) to let others try cracking Blu-ray Disc movies, too. Doubtless a GUI-based version will be along soon to join the one already available for HD DVD.
HEXUS can report that BitTorrent traffic is being monitored. We know that this isn't new to some of our USA readers. The difference here is that we have had a report that a user of UK ISP Pipex has been contacted over downloading “unlicensed copies of copyrighted computer programs”.

Apple will charge $29 for the final version of its Boot Camp utility for Mac OS X Tiger, according to rumours site MacScoop. Presumably, Apple is thinking to give Windows-using Mac owners an additional incentive to upgrade to OS X Leopard, since that will have an equivalent tool built in and appear cheaper than it would do otherwise.
Currently in the beta testing phase, Codemaster's Online Gaming's ambitious MMORPG set in Tolkein's World of Middle Earth is already looking like it could be something very special.
It's starting to look as thought Microsoft has finally twigged that the retail launch of Windows Vista at the end of the month is likely to be an almighty flop, at least in the USA and Canada, but the company seems to be ignoring the consequence of inflated prices in the rest of the world. We like Vista a lot but think it's going to bomb at its launch unless prices are massively cut in the next 11 days.

We've now got our heads around what Skype Pro is all about but can't say with any certainty who will or won't be better off adopting this pricing plan, rather than sticking with separate payments for SkypeOut and SkypeIn or, indeed, opting for something quite different from a phone or internet service provider. What is clear, though, is that - outside of the USA and Canada - the company has from today introduced a new 3.3p connection fee for each chargeable call made to a landline or mobile!
The queue of Sony haters is growing with Valve's Gabe Newell being the latest person to slate the console.

Apple says that its revenues in the first quarter of its present financial year were a record $7.1 billion and generated a record net profit of $1 billion. During that quarter - ending Dec 30, 2006 - the company reports shipping over 21 million iPods - half as many again as in the same period last year - and more than 1.6 million Mac computers, an increase of 28 per cent.
Internet phone company Skype is readying a new pricing plan for chargeable calls to landlines and mobiles that may or may not be quite as "disruptive" as it infers. We're struggling to figure out how much cheaper (or indeed, more expensive) the new Skype Pro "premium subscription package" will be compared to current Skype Out prices.
Perfectly for idiots like me, you could just go for a full on Preface enabled remote, such as this little beauty, a fully functional Windows Media Centre Remote with Preface Screen… you can do all the usual Media Centre Stuff as well as flick through other media and data files which would then be displayed on the display built into the remote… and as it’s using Class One Bluetooth, you’ve got a range of 330 feet… so people living in bloody great mansions should be happy too.
Perhaps one of the most innovative products we’ve seen at CES 2007 has to be the 3D force feedback ‘mouse’ from Novint Technologies and probably one of the weirdest things about it is that it doesn’t look like a mouse at all…
Preface is NVIDIA’s secondary processor and display subsystem that interfaces with SideShow. All fine and dandy there then. But what NVIDIA have done is make Preface small. Really small. So small that you can get a Preface device with a 2.5” screen that’s is no bigger than a credit card and roughly only three times as thick.
Seagate has launched what it claims is the world's fastest hard drive. The new 15,000rpm drive, the Savvio 15K, is an addition to the Savvio enterprise series.
It’s big and chunky, sure, but it actually feels pretty good in your hands and, unlike many other proactive cases I’ve tried, you can still access all the buttons easily. Even better is the sound quality, which through the PSP’s built in speakers is a bit weedy as we all know. Audio through the Pro Audio System is far better, probably helped by the Bass Boost Technology which, while being a long way from gut-rumbling THX, does sound way better than a standard PSP.
The Protector and Xploder Media Pack has a lot going for it. First off, there’s the damn near bullet proof metal case with, for all you climbers out there, a karabiner clip. So as you drop off the North face of the Eiger after Sly Stallone has let you slip, as least you can get in a quick game of GTA before making a jam splat.
There’s something a bit more interesting going on here, especially when you take that last Autumn Update from Microsoft into account and the subsequent failures various folk suffered... bear with me, this’ll all make sense in the end...
