Bad BIOS images cause AMD graphics recall

AMD's add-in-board partners have had to recall various ATI graphics cards due to a dodgy BIOS image flashed onto the cards. ATI Radeon HD 2400 and 2600 cards have been affected.

Digi Times claims sources at card-makers have said tens of thousands of cards have been recalled.

It isn't clear how bad the problem with the BIOS image is, but it's affecting all tiers of add-in-board partners, it seems.

The fix is easy - just flash a fixed BIOS onto the cards, but the makers need to get them back from the channel to do so.

Reports say only a small number made it into the hands of customers, and while the makers are still waiting to get most of the recalled cards back, they've been identified and are on their way.

Despite the seemingly swift action to remedy the situation, AMD still has egg on its face. It appears as though the BIOS error proliferated through the channel due to a bug in AMD's... err... bug testing software. Its validation and diagnostic software didn't notice the issue. Whoops!

Luckily, there's nothing wrong with AMD's 2400 and 2600 GPUs (that we know of), so once the BIOS images are fixed the cards should be going back out into the channel.

Well I can't see how it's going to cost AMD anything, unless they fork out for the costs the AIB partners incurred getting the cards back to reflash them.
nVidia have had years they wish had never happened too, swings and roundabouts :)
“Reports say only a small number made it into the hands of customers”

I guess that when they aren't selling, there isn't much damage limitation needed ;)
