Intel's recent price-cuts have brought quad-core computing down to - dare we say - acceptable levels. You can now purchase an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 for around £165.

However, most etailers are looking to push their older B3-stepping stock out of the door rather than the newer, cooler G0-stepping that was officially announced by Intel this month.

The G0-stepping (SLACR) Q6600 runs with a TDP of 95W. Compare that to the 105W for the B3 (SL9UM) and enthusiast will absolutely want the former - it should clock like buggery, frankly.

How will you know if you're buying the preferable G0 or older, generally not-so-overclockable B3?

Scan, for the first time, is launching a separate SKU for the G0-stepping and, should you purchase it, you will be guaranteed one from the very latest yields. We're pleased to see that Scan won't charging its customers any more for the privilege. We note that Scan currently has no stock, however.

That'll be the one I mentioned earlier. They've had 12 in stock for about a week, or so they say.

No idea where Mr EzyRyder got his from though. My Google-Fu skills are obviously not so good.Quote
