There's something for almost everyone at NVIDIA's NV4x party. Enthusiasts with fat wallets and nun-like levels of patience tend to opt for GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB. The more practical amongst you, who appreciate that Ultra models are almost as rare as hen's teeth, often look at the cheaper, slightly slower GeForce 6800 GT. It's also a full 16-pipe design with all the tasty features that NV40 has to offer. The problem is still an asking price of at least £250 and nearer £300 for full retail models from big-name partners.
Going further down the NV40-derived range sees a successive lopping off of pixel pipelines, clock-for-clock shading power, and memory bandwidth/framebuffer. That's been the case for a while now, and both NVIDIA and ATI are past masters at it. The benefit an enthusiast gains with picking a recent midrange GPU over an outgoing one is a similar price point but extra performance, both in benchmarks and card-specific features.
Currently positioned in at around the £150 mark are retail examples of NVIDIA's GeForce 6600 GT GPU. We took a look at a reference model a
couple of months back and were suitably impressed with its excellent feature set and strong performance. Two months later and retail examples have begun flooding the marketplace. One of the very first we got our hands on was Inno3D's. Let's see if it can pull any surprises as we give it the HEXUS examination.
