Toshiba, the world's fourth-largest PC laptop maker, will end a six-year Intel-only deal and begin shipping its low-cost models with AMD's mobile CPUs.

The announcement follows on from the top-three players - HP, Dell, Acer - all using CPUs from both Intel and AMD.

Simple economics has forced Toshiba's hand, it seems, and AMD-equipped Toshs could account for around 20 per cent of total notebook sales, according to a report in the Nikkei business daily.

Merom and its derivatives may well offer more performance than their AMD counterparts, but, thanks to Intel's premium pricing, they're difficult to shoehorn into a Ā£299 laptop.

On a related note, AMD's already outlined plans for its next-generation mobile architecture and we took a look at it here.

Kudos to Toshiba, I've always found my old XP-M to be as reliable as any Intel laptop, abeit the cheaper price..

The fact that not everyone will be doing intensive enough work on their laptop anyways. A slower and cheaper system with dual core like a TL-50 should be more than enough.

And having used a T7200, its no faster than my Pentium D 920 in my office, and with only PDF making, writing and some minor molecular sims running in the background, I think I should have saved USD500+ on an AMD lappy without the bells and whistles..

In the end the consumer wins.. :)
i have toshiba lappy and very happy wit it, thats all i have to say :)
never been an amd fan. just dont appeal to me intel = quality
