HEXUS recently reviewed AMD's Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor. There was nothing new in terms of architecture, with the CPU being based on a 90nm manufacturing process and packing dual cores operating at 3GHz.

Performance was also good, and whilst not on a par with Intel's quad-core models, the attractive street price of £300 was the cheapest that AMD had launched its flagship CPU in a long, long time.

Now, in response to Intel upping the ante with its 2.93GHz-clocked quad-core beast, AMD has done what consumers just love: a massive price chop for its X2 line.

CPU AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Price as at 09/04/07 £300 £200 £150 - - - -
Price as at 10/04/07 £155 £115 £110 £650 £620 £300 £185

Yup, that's right, the X2 6000+ is almost half the price. Buy one and get one free, effectively!

Is this a sign of AMD only able to sell any volume by taking a large hacksaw to its pricing, or does it have the consumer's best interest at heart and feels for their pocket? We'll leave you to work that one out.

The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is available at the following etailers. Interestingly, neither have stock right now.

£156.28 @ SCAN
£155.01 @ Komplett

That is 1 hefty price cut. Looks like the consumers are the winners in this battle :)
I worry about the stock in the channel and also the product perception

It's not helpful for price wars to happen and Intel must be really hurting AMD right now…

… Lets hope Barcelona has some umpft to warm up the battle
I wonder what the production costs of these chips are ? Are AMD still making a profit off of each one they sell ?
If they aren't making money, if the next chip isn't “all singing, all dancing” they could be in some serious do-do…..
They are already in really serious do-do, they are loosing hundreds of millions of dollars per quarter, a CPU range which is obsolete and by the time they completely switch from 90nm to 65nm Intel will be on 45nm production. On the graphics side they don't even have a product to sell that can compete against Nvidias 8800 series.

I hope they can survive or else the choice will be Intel or Intel and Nvidia or Nvidia. Both companies will be able to charge whatever prices they like.
