Introduction

Much was made last year of AMD's decision to buy ATI. The acquisition was explained by pooled expertise that would lead to a more-efficient use of resources and broader market penetration in areas where each company wasn't as strong as it could be.

The incorporation of ATI came at some cost, however. Internal restructuring meant that certain projects were put on hold and others binned completely.

One such ATI project was a revised chipset for AMD's AM2 processors. That, now, finally sees the light of day under the name of AMD 690G.

Possessing native HDMI, an Avivo video-processing engine, multi-monitor support and a competent southbridge, 690G holds a lot of promise as a low-cost chipset looking to tap into the lucrative IGP market. Read on to see if the green (with a dash of red) team has picked a winner as its first starter.
