Day Minus One

Dear Diary,

Gosh, I’m soooo excited!
I’ve just been told that my copy of Vista Ultimate is on the way and will be here tomorrow! Whoopee!
I’ve been running the beta and RC versions for a while now, so I’m quite really looking forward to getting the full version, getting rid of MCE 2006 and switching completely to Vista.
I’ve been having a look around on the internet and it looks as though I’ll have to get rid of that silly dual-boot thing. I did find that a bit annoying as I’d have to sit there and watch my PC boot to make sure it went into the right operating system...
Hmmm, it says here that I have to edit some files and delete a couple BOOT files from my C drive then is should all be back to normal and ready for Vista!

Ok, it’s four hours later. I’ve got a good mind to write to that blogger and complain. I deleted the files and followed his instructions to the letter but when I re-booted MCE had somehow lost its product key and wouldn’t reboot! I was locked out of my own system! I had to do a safe mode boot and then shut down and restart and then it worked.

Diary, I don’t mind telling you, that was a nightmare. I still haven’t moved any files or backed up anything important, so over-writing with Vista would’ve meant I’d lose everything. Still, I’m back in now so time to go to bed and wait for the postman. (Not that the postman visits me in bed, not like that slut at number 22, I mean, time to go and sleep...)

Vista Day One
9am
It’s here! Vista is HERE!! Yay!

I’m writing this with pen and paper ready to copy back in later as I’ve hit a small problem. I didn’t realise just how much stuff I have to save... or how big the files and folders were. I’ve had to go through and delete loads of recorded TV from my MCE installation. For some reason, when I set that to record a series it records EVERY showing of each programme in the series. I really should’ve kept on top of it but I didn’t.

It was only because I was shocked at the 270Gb of data that I thought I’d better have another look. So if the BBC ever lose their copies of Torchwood, I have 5 of each show on here... Thanks BBC for originally airing on BBC2, then again on BBC3 at 9pm and 1am... and again on BBC2 at 11pm... and finally on BBC3 at 11pm. But then I should be glad it’s not Scrubs. Looking at the number of times that has recorded, you’d think Channel 4 and ABC1 had nothing else to show (other than fat blonde bigots). The funny thing is, the ABC versions of the same show are all much longer... probably because they spend 5 minutes of every commercial break advertising other shows on ABC... oh, and they do FOUR breaks in a half hour show... Still, with all those ads I’m happy in the knowledge that Carol Vordemann won’t be wanting for a few pennies after all the stuff she’s done for Purple Loans. Now if only I could get that Sheila’s Wheels jingle out of my head!

Anyway, after deleting all those duplicate shows and loads of other stuff that I’m sure it seemed a good idea to record at the time, I’ve managed to get the recorded TV down to a much more manageable 107Gb. Add in my music, videos and docs and that’s a total of just under 150Gb. I’m not worried, I have plenty of drive space.

What does worry my slightly is my mirrored RAID array. I don’t know whether Vista will see it as a RAID array or two physical drives. To play it safe, I’ll lob stuff on there I’d like to keep but also won’t be too worried if I lose.

Oh. It seems that shifting hundreds of gigabytes of data between drives takes some time... at last count, it was 77 minutes to go... Oh well, I’ll just go and read War and Peace.
