Introduction

ASUS P4C800-E Canterwood motherboard

There's going to be a socket change for Intel's Prescott in the very near future. Socket-T is that future. Current Celeron, Pentium 4 Northwood, and Prescott packaging weighs in with a 478-pin count. Socket-T, however, raises that to 775 pins. This decision guarantees the Northwood core's demise and ushers in new chipsets to keep with the Prescott's intended speed ramping.

That should mean an end to consideration to current S478 boards, right?. It's not as clear-cut as that. Current Prescott performance can be described as mediocre, and the Northwood, running at the same clock speed, can be considered a better performance core. Add in the large number of processors that currently run off a S478 form and you'll begin to understand how and why Springdale (i865xx) and Canterwood (i875P) boards are still sought after.

Our search for the perfect Canterwood-based motherboard goes on. Samples from MSI, ASUS, ABIT, DFI, and EPoX have all had desirable attributes. None, however, have been perfect. ASUS has redesigned its excellent P4C800 Canterwood motherboard to offer even greater levels of performance and compatibility. Is the P4C800-E the Holy Grail of the i875P world?. Let's find out.
