Following our gaming benchmarks we thought it'd be good to represent the performance losses to SLI and CrossFire without bridges and dongles in graph form. Voila...

Results

The above graph shows the same trends for both SLI and CrossFire, although the magnitudes vary.

Performance loss in Far Cry is roughly the same for both CrossFire and SLI. However, CrossFire takes a serious hit in Quake 4. Splinter Cell's the most interesting, dongle-less CrossFire hardly any slower than getting your dongle out.

What can we take from this, then? Clearly the performance impact varies from game to game, rendering mode to rendering mode and from one multi-GPU implementation to another. Does one suffer less than another? That's a tough one to call, given the variations.
