Introduction

Cast your minds back a couple of months. AMD had just debuted its new AM2 form factor with a show of power from its FX-62 processor. NVIDIA seized the opportunity by launching a range of nForce 500-series core logics that provided a wealth of features and performance in equal measure.

The intervening two months has seen a lot happen. The summer's been scorching hot in the U.K. but the technology scene even hotter. ATI's jumped in bed with AMD, NVIDIA's been granted a license for its multi-GPU SLI technology to be used with Intel's Centrino-powered laptops, and Intel's new Core 2 Duo/Extreme processors have been launched to general acclaim.

What more could possibly happen? Well, NVIDIA could respond by launching its impressive nForce 590 SLI core logic for Intel's new processors. Funnily enough, that's exactly what's happening today. This may well end up being the performance chipset for the enthusiast looking for multi-GPU fun with Core 2 Duo as a base. With that in mind, join me in a tour of what makes the Intel Edition tick.
