Fuel cells have been a hot (well mild) topic for quite some time now, but we still don't seem to be using them. But they're in the process of being commercialised in Taiwan.

Today, DigiTimes is reporting on Taiwanese firm Antig Technology, who will be shipping commercial direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) products come the fourth quarter of this year. It'll be a while before fuel cells replace batteries, if they ever completely do, but in the meantime, Antig's first solution will avoid attempting to shun batteries.

Their first creation will, according to DigiTimes, be a 16W charger unit, for recharging batteries for mobiles, PDAs and other wondrous portable devices. It'll weigh 800grammes and be around 230×70×80mm in size.

While Antig's solution could be one of the first commercial DMFCs out of Taiwan, others have already been shipping products, such as a German firm, SFC.

Nevertheless, the more the merrier, as we've not all started buying up fuel cell powered devices yet. Pricing is suggested to be around $5k in US money for a unit, and around $5 for a cartridge.

$5k heh count me out for a while :P
I did a report on fuel cell technology around 4 years ago, they hold great potential for providing clean in-city energy, we just need to figure an economical way to produce hydrogen en masse and how to deliver it to cities. These are the main problems - efficiency is already acceptable.
