Kinc and Crotale break Futuremark world records with Conroe and Crossfire
Marcus 'Kinc' Hultin, one of the world's very best high-end overclockers, dropped me a line on MSN last night to let me know that he and Crotale -- Robert Kihlberg -- have managed to break a couple of Futuremark 3DMark world records at this year's Dreamhack LAN event in Sweden.Kinc let me know he was confident of at least one WR before Dreamhack started, and using Conroe and ATI X1900 Crossfire the double team have done just that.
Using custom phase-change cascade cooling on the GPUs, and LN2 on the CPU, they hit clocks in the 4GHz range on an E6600 Core 2 Duo, and ~840/920 on the GPUs, depending on the test being run.
You can read all about it on Nordic Hardware, including the scores achieved, system details and pictures of the guys themselves working away. And don't follow Crotale's lead by handling LN2 containers without gloves, no matter how insulated they are ;)
So big big congratulations to Kinc and Crotale for their 2001 SE and 06 WRs, struggling for their high-end overclocks in summer heat that's warming up the Dreamhack halls to 30°C air temperature, despite massive air conditioning. 5000 PCs and associated bodies tends to do that!
While the overclocked scores of 74553 in 3DMark 2001SE and 13521 in 3DMark06 might not mean much, they do somewhat point to future PC performance from components with similar stock capability, whenever it is they might show up, and as a display of engineering and tweaking skill it's rarely beaten.
Again, nice one Marcus and Robert! And Marcus whispers that a better Core 2 Duo is hopefully on the way so they can try for even higher on the CPU, and they'll switch to GeForce 7900 GTX SLI for an attempt on the 3DMark03 WR.
