A new film was released at the weekend and despite viewers being encouraged by the producers to “download the torrent” or even watch it for free on YouTube, it has already racked up over 2,700 paid downloads and many pre-orders of the DVD version. The new film is a feature length documentary telling the story of The Pirate Bay.

“The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard” documentary

The documentary was filmed by Simon Klose, mainly featuring video excerpts from the legal trials of the three founder Pirate Bay members. It was produced following a Kickstarter campaign to pay for a professional video editor to produce the finished documentary film. Last week the 82 minute production premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and yesterday its availability via torrents was announced on the tpbafk.tv website.

Trailer

“The major motion picture studios lost an estimated $6.1 billion due to piracy.”

The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard is available to; watch online in trailer form, watch online entirely (both via YouTube links), the torrent is downloadable (with 20k seeders) and you may also watch via tpbafk.tv for $10. If you would like a boxed DVD for your collection the site is currently taking pre-orders at $23.

It’s hard to know how popular the film has been as “TPB doesn’t keep stats” regarding torrent downloads but nearly 850,000 people have watched it via YouTube and there has been over 2,700 paid downloads. In total so far including the paid downloads and DVD sales over $32,000 revenue has been made from the film.

I'd guess the only people spending money on this are people who don't actually use the piratebay. It wold be kind of ironic if this thing made a profit when the very existence of TPB is all about people not profiting from DVDs…
I think this will be interesting to watch! The pirate bay has always seemed like one of those small websites. You don't realize how big of a website it actually is until you watch something like this!
To bad its blocked by most ISPs so you can't even go to it to download it!
The torrent's up already!
