Co-founder of The Pirate Bay (TPB) torrent file sharing website Gottfrid Svartholm Warg was arrested by Cambodian authorities late last week. Mr Warg was wanted on charges of copyright infringement in his home country of Sweden. He skipped the appeal and sentencing “due to illness” and it was well known he had fled Sweden for a Holiday in Cambodia.

Sentenced to one year in prison

Mr Warg was found guilty in 2009 alongside the other three founders of TPB on a charge of violating copyright laws. The group were originally handed down sentences of a year each in prison and fines totalling £2.8 million. The Pirate Bay founders decided to appeal and at a hearing in 2010 Mr Warg’s defence lawyer said he had fallen ill while on holiday in Cambodia so couldn’t appear in court. The other three TBP founders got sentences reduced to between four and ten months terms, however the damages payment request increased to £4.7 million. Mr Warg failed to turn up to serve his prison term so Swedish authorities issued an international arrest warrant.

Should have gone to Ecuador?

Speaking to the AFP news agency Cambodian national police spokesman Kirth Chantharith said “His arrest was made at the request of the Swedish government for a crime related to information technology. We don't have an extradition treaty with Sweden but we'll look into our laws and see how we can handle this case.”

The report says that Mr Warg was living in a riverside apartment above The Cadillac Bar in Phnom Penh’s main tourist area and police apprehended him there. If the deportation plane takes him directly to Sweden he will then have to do his one year’s porridge. Also there may be the question of Warg’s share of the £4.7 million fine.

Cool, so now Sweden is coercing other countries into arbitrary extraditions they don't even have treaties with?

I just love the way the west is going.
You can run but you can't hide (not even in Cambodia!) :)
Maybe i should quit using Pirate Bay :D

Yes, we live in such fear. The guy had a trail, failed to show up for part of it, was found guilty in absentia. The Swedish government asked for the guy to be arrested, the guy in question been a Swedish Citizen. Also I would question the legality of his VISA, on the paperwork for the Cambodian VISA you have to state your convictions, this is relivent because he must have re-issued one, most likely he hopped out to Aranyaprathet. This means he has almost certainly violated the rules of his VISA, assuming he is on a standard tourist/work VISA.

Now what I find even more shocking about your comment is the shocking ignorance it portrays of the level of the life of people who are not in the west. Cambodia is a country which Transparency International ranks at 2.1 out of 10. Or 164th out of only 183 countries.

You know what, I chuffing love the west.

If you want to go live in a place like Cambodia, as an ordinary citizen, not some spoilt western backpacker, then I might take your views as anything other than “Ermgaahds Someone who helped me get free stuff has been legally found guilty, and detained after fleeing his trial, outrage!”.

So? And also do you have any suggestion they where coerced? I'm mean your making it sound as if he hasn't violated any terms of his VISA, which based on my first hand experience of Cambodian paperwork, he has.
"Pirate Bay co-founder of arrested in Cambodia" What?
