Elspa have today launched their new website offering information to parents about age restrictions on video games.

Many children play games that are not meant for their age group. They are often picking up prostitutes on Grand Theft Auto or slicing heads of zombies on Resident Evil whist the parents sit, blissfully unaware that these games are totally unsuitable.

The problem is parents assume that video games are meant for children when in fact they apply to all age groups. Packaging on games show an age rating and parents should not buy that video game for their child unless it is suitable.

In a conversation with Roger Bennet of ELSPA he said, "Computer and video games are strictly regulated and all display appropraite age rating on the packaging. However, as research has highlighted, consumers, in particular parents appear to be confused about these ratings. The main concern is that the words 'video game' implies that they are for children, when in fact the average age of a gamer is mid to late twenties. Companies are making games that appeal to all ages and the website provides all the information on age ratings, in a clear manner". It's about time parents took notice of the video games their children are playing. Look at the packaging before buying and don't buy them if it's not suitable!
