AGP Lovin'...

This year we’ve finally seen the widespread adoption of the PCI-Express (PCIe) and, with it, perhaps not unsurprisingly, what seems to be the death toll of AGP.

Strong PCIe chipsets have come from ATi Technologies, NVIDIA and last week VIA Technologies, and the power and flexibility of this new, faster bus has allowed innovative PCIe graphics solutions such as ATi HyperMemory, NVIDIA TurboCache and VIA RapidFire for entry-level to mid-range systems, right up to up to ATi Crossfire and SLI and for extreme users.

But with all this happening, it would appear that these companies have given up on the AGP interconnect.

In a very tight market, this seemed a bit strange to us – since there are a lot of people craving for more graphics performance from their existing AGP based systems.

Well the bean that’s sprouting is that NVIDIA’s premier partner XFX Graphics is looking to fill this vacuum with the release of an AGP based XFX GeForce 6800GS.

XFX seem set to claim that this will be the highest performing AGP solution on the market.

At the time of going to print NVIDIA gave us there usual line of “you know we do not talk about unannounced products” and as of yet we’ve been unable to get in touch with XFX.

We wonder what the red team will do to take on this new AGP beast. More juice to follow soon on this HEXUS.bean.
