DVD burners all round

In the Taiwanese Market, sales of DVD burners has surpassed those of DVD-ROM/CDRW combo drives. Combo drives now have less than 50% of the Taiwanese market. Interestingly Sony's drives have gone from having a 50/50 Combo drive/DVD burner split to 15/85.

Digi Times reports that the reason for this is the seemingly frozen price of combo drives, coupled with the ever decreasing price of a DVD burner.

Of course, we have the fun of high capacity DVD burners to come, but until then it looks as though people are snapping up 'classic' DVD burners. You're less and less likely to see a DVD-ROM/CDRW combo drive in a PC for sale now, unless it's a real cost-cutter.

With the price difference between combo and DVD writer drives now, it just isn't worth getting a combo drive. Even all the budget PCs I've seen have DVD writers in now.
I couldn't believe it - I picked up 2 drives last week, they cost me a shocking amount (35!) so cheap..
What is the best choice for a second optical drive? Are DVD-ROMs any more reliable than the writers? Or does the low cost mean that you may as well have two writers these days….?

(Please feel free to move this into the hardware forum if you think that is more appropriate!)
You can get all round drives that will do everything, well that's what I would do anyway.
I would get one which does all round - I have the NEC Units here now - I have had Plextors.

I would have bought Pioneer but they were out of stock
